Course Objectives

1. To provide an overview of the purpose of the Year 1 Phonics Screening Check (KS1)
2. To consider practical strategies in the teaching and learning of phonics
3. To outline how the check should be administered
4. To consider how to use the check to identify gaps in learning

This course will consider good practice that schools can undertake to minimise the impact of the Coronavirus Pandemic on the children's understanding of Phonics. It will consider effective teaching and learning practices that can be undertaken alongside practical suggestions for activities to undertake. In addition, we will consider how administering a past version of the check in late summer can be used by schools to identify future support needed.

During the session we will look at the National Guidance materials; consider how the test will be administered as well as looking at important do's and don’ts for schools.

This course is aimed particularly at teachers in Year 1 who have not administered the check in the past or who want a refresher about procedures; it is also appropriate for literacy subject leaders and members of the senior management team.

Despite the check not being statutory in 2021, this course will fulfil the need for teachers to be trained in order to administer future version of the check
