Course Objectives

This course will cover:
• To explore what disciplinary reading means in English and how this differs from other subjects.
• To explore how to devise an impactful rich reading curriculum in English.
• To explore how to improve the explicit teaching of subject specific active reading strategies to improve reading comprehension.
• To explore how writing can be used to support reading comprehension in English.

As Alex Quigley states in his recent publication 'Closing the Reading Gap', reading is the 'master skill', and certainly in English this is a central tenet of the subject. In English, we know the power and wonder of reading, and this course will provide the opportunity for delegates to reflect on their reading curriculum and consider how they can ensure that it provides a true, reading-rich experience for students.

This course also seeks to explore the way in which students read differently in English as opposed to other subject disciplines and how we can improve subject specific reading by overtly teaching specific reading strategies and effective writing tasks that best support the different ways in which students read in English.
