Course Objectives

This course will cover:
• To develop understanding of how and why some students struggle in mathematics lessons.
• To consider and discuss different pathways available to students with low prior attainment in mathematics including accessing and becoming more successful at GCSE.
• To use lessons learned from research to support development of understanding and fluency with mathematical staples.
• To provide teachers with a systematic approach to improving outcomes for pupils struggling to achieve grades 1 to 3 at GCSE.

As one element of Education Inspection Framework, inspectors will consider what steps the school has taken to ensure that those students with a SEND are making good progress and achieving good outcomes.

This course will discuss and consider strategies to address some of the issues facing students with low prior attainment in mathematics.

Who should attend: This course is aimed at mathematics teachers in the secondary phase. It may also be appropriate for HLTAs working with groups of mathematicians with low prior attainment in mathematics.
